This sacrament of Baptism is named after the central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize (Greek baptizein) means to "plunge" or "immerse"; the "plunge" into the water symbolizes the catechumen's burial into Christ's death, from which he rises up by resurrection with him, as "a new creature." (Catechism 1214)
Baptisms are scheduled at weekend Masses (Baptisms during Lent must be scheduled after the final Mass on Sunday.) to emphasize our belief that baptism incorporates an infant into the Life of Christ and the life of the Christian Community. By their nature, Sacraments are public events, not private celebrations. There may be more than one baptism at a scheduled time, involving more than one family. Baptisms after Mass are the exception rather than the rule.
Adult Baptisms are celebrated in conjunction with the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) and are celebrated primarily at the Easter Vigil.
Registered parishioners wishing to have their child baptized within St. Mary Magdalene Parish Family are required to first attend a one hour baptism class (see below).
