First Communion is offered to all baptized children in second grade or older who have completed at least one year of religious education. Make sure you and your family are registered parishoners.
We are so excited that you want to pursue the opportunity for your child to make their First Reconciliation and First Communion at the St. Mary Magdalene Family of Parishes! Because every family's journey is unique, here is how to get started based on your child's current situation:
Please enroll your child in sacramental preparation through one of our parish day schools or our Family of Faith Program. (Note: You will need to provide a copy of their Baptismal Certificate).
We would love to help you arrange for your child’s baptism first! Please reach out so we can guide you through infant/early childhood baptism preparation before they begin First Communion preparation.
They will enter the Church through the Order of Christian Initiation adapted for Children. In order to be in the Order of Christian Initiation, at least one parent must be an active, registered, participating Catholic. If the parents aren’t Catholic, but are interested in learning more about the faith, please reach out to Elizabeth Otte, Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation. This is a requirement of the Roman Catholic Church, not a specific rule for our parishes.
If they were baptized in a Christian church using the Trinitarian form with pouring or immersion (using water with "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"), we can discuss the best path forward. You will need to provide a copy of their Baptismal Certificate from the church, or complete an Affidavit of Baptism (if you witnessed). If at least one parent is a practicing Catholic, this often involves making a Profession of Faith before the First Communion Mass and joining their peers in sacramental formation in the day school or Family of Faith program.
Whatever your family's situation, we are here to support and guide you every step of the way!
